Fidelio in Lockdown
Im Rahmen der Reihe MachtMusikPolitik
Beethoven’s opera is set in a state prison, which means that Florestan is, in today’s terms, a political prisoner. Classically described as «the opera of freedom», it is arguably the opera of the state, and of the evolving perceptions of the state’s monopoly on violence. Especially thanks to the Prisoners' choir, it is also a locus classicus for the aesthetic representation of moral values. Yet this has coexisted in its reception history with the downplaying of class- and gender-related inequalities, also expressed in the music. This talk will address the relationship between music, drama, and politics in Beethoven's work, and reflect on its resonances in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, where the limitation of freedom by the state widely appeared as a necessary evil.
